5 Reasons You Hate Golf and How to Change That

If you are not an avid golfer that plays multiple times a week who has always had a passion for the sport, you could be one of golf’s worst critics. Are you jealous of those who have been blessed with a talent for the sport that was denied to you? Does spending four hours stuck on a course with no cell phone, no entertainment, and only the stress of a few too many water hazards make you want to take up bowling? We can identify.

We work in golf all day but that doesn’t mean we get to play golf all day so we can think of a few reasons why you might hate golf but, for now, let’s talk about the top five.

Reason I Hate Golf #5 – Golfing with the know-it-all.

You know, the grandfather you never really connected with that lives in Indiana and plays all of the time. Every year you are forced to join in family gatherings around the holidays and every year you dread having to take part in conversations with him because he seems to know everything about the game of golf. He always wants to chat about how you have been playing and assertively offers up pointers on how you could be a better golfer. The advice is always unwelcome, but you have to fake being interested to ensure no tumultuous family rifts occur- your mother would never forgive you.

Reason I Hate Golf #4 – Golf on TV is boring.

Watching golf on tv is more boring than sitting in the waiting room at the dentist. While you love to partake in a casual golf game every now and then, you would much rather be at a tournament or playing than watching it on tv. Sure, there are a few exciting moments, the rare hole in one or watching Tiger land that 60 ft putt but, let’s be real, who actually likes to watch it on tv? Well, other than that grandfather of yours.

Reason I Hate Golf #3 -  Golf costs a lot.

You pay a lot of money for trendy golf clothes, clubs, a membership and then throw in on a bet with your buddies only to lose it all and end up wrapping one of your clubs around a tree. And that was your favorite club. A very expensive club-yikes, that hurts. Your wife is going to kill you. Do even still have a wife?

Reason I Hate Golf #2 - Golf is so stuffy.

What happened to the day when you could ride down the road to your small-town course, throw your cooler on the back of the cart and play a quick nine holes (and in your wrinkled work pants). This just doesn’t happen anymore- all of your buddies want to make bets and seem to talk about nothing but the latest golf app that has incredibly accurate GPS technology. Let’s bring back the fun, the coolers on the course and occasional friend who prefers to play with music in the background. This is supposed to be a game after all.

Reason I Hate Golf #1 - Golf Pros make it look easy.

Whether you’re watching them on tv or at a tournament, they make every shot look effortless. So naturally when you get on the course with your friends, you believe that you can birdie five times on the front nine. The reality is, you can’t. Not even on a good day. Slowly you realize that the possibility of being a pro are less than a reality. Your dreams are then crushed and your day is ruined. Thank goodness for the beverage cart- you can at least end your day drowning your sorrows in a nice cold beverage.

So what’s the answer? How do you turn these reasons around and start to love golf again?

Stop taking it so seriously.

Would you rather sign up for pricey, intense lessons to make those professional level shots or sign up for a charity tournament where the entire goal is to have fun while raising money for a cause that you care about? (Oh, and we have a few ideas about how to help with that)

Don’t have the time or patience for a four-hour game? Head to your local driving range or get to a par – 3 course. Trust me, when you’re thinking more about how much fun you’ll have that day or how much money you’ve just raised, you’re going to be more relaxed and might even land a few shots even your grandfather would be jealous of.
